The Opportunity

Orrick is a small community just outside of Kansas City, Missouri. In May of 2014 a tornado destroyed part of their high school building, including parts of the heating and cooling system throughout the district. Before the tornado, the district needed to address aging heating and cooling systems as well as bring ventilation codes up to current standards. The plan was to evaluate different options, design a new system, and procure funding within a year and complete the project in the summer of 2015. The tornado accelerated those plans to accommodate students by the fall semester of 2014.

Technical Solution

With an original building built in 1923, along with several additions built over the years, the Orrick School building was a collection of different heating, cooling, and ventilation systems. Part of our task was to determine the best system that would work throughout the facility in each different space. Additionally, we needed to add ventilation in order to meet current building codes. We determined a VRF (variable refrigerant flow) system would be best for this building, which would allow the district to get away from costly fuel oil and propane heating costs.

Financial Solution

Navitas quantified the savings from changing the heating and cooling system. Savings, along with bond issue and insurance monies, provided funding for a $1.6 million project that helped to modernize their educational space.
